WQIO Ohio's Super Station
Mount Vernon City Council will meet Monday evening with several significant pieces of legislation on the agenda, including the next phase of the city’s new police station, funding for wastewater improvements and changes to the Fire Department’s authorized staffing level.
The regular legislative session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, August 24, at the Mount Vernon Municipal Center. The city lists the meeting as a City Council legislative session.
The agenda packet shows Resolution 2026-92 as one of the night’s major items. The resolution would authorize Safety-Service Director Tanner Salyers to accept Guaranteed Maximum Price Package No. 2 for certain components of the new Mount Vernon Police Station project.
The package is part of the city’s agreement with the construction manager at risk and would allow another portion of the police station project to move forward. The agenda identifies the legislation as an emergency measure.
The police station has already moved through its first guaranteed maximum price package, which covered site work, groundwork and early procurement. Previous committee materials described that first package as representing roughly 28% of the overall project.
Wastewater Plant Funding Also on Agenda
Council will also consider Resolution 2026-89, authorizing the city to apply for and accept a Water Pollution Control Loan Fund agreement.
The proposed loan would support the planning, design and/or construction of wastewater facilities. The legislation would also establish a dedicated source for repaying the loan and is being considered as an emergency measure.
The resolution has been assigned to the council’s Utilities Committee, chaired by John Ruckman and Dale Miller.
Council to Consider More Fire Department Positions
Another item could affect the city’s Fire Department.
Ordinance 2026-29 would establish the number of hourly employees authorized in the Mount Vernon Fire Department. The ordinance is listed for a second reading and has been assigned to the Employee & Community Relations Committee.
The broader council agenda also includes legislation related to the city’s full-time firefighter staffing authorization.
Shellmar Park Name Change
Council is also scheduled to consider Resolution 2026-87, which would rename Shellmar Park in honor of John Francis.
The resolution is listed for a second reading and has been assigned to the Parks & Recreation Committee.
City Finances and Other Legislation
Several financial measures are also on the agenda.
Resolution 2026-90 would authorize supplemental appropriations, while Resolution 2026-91 would authorize the city auditor to pay bills under the state’s “then and now” certification provision. Both are assigned to the Finance & Budget Committee.
Council will also consider Ordinance 2026-30, which would authorize Safety-Service Director Salyers to execute a contract with Enterprise Fleet Management for leasing city vehicles.
A first-reading ordinance, 2026-31, would amend Chapter 1305 of the city’s codified ordinances. The measure is assigned to the Utilities Committee.
The agenda also includes the routine acceptance of minutes, communications, committee reports and remarks from the administration and council before adjournment.
Monday’s meeting comes as Mount Vernon continues work on several major infrastructure and public-safety projects, with the police station and wastewater system among the most significant items before council. The city says council meetings are open to the public and are also available for viewing online.
