Mount Vernon’s Annual Leaf Collection Begins November 2

City crews are preparing for Mount Vernon’s annual fall leaf collection program, which officially begins Monday, November 2.

Three dedicated leaf-collection machines will work across the city throughout November. Crews will start with main thoroughfares before moving into side streets and outlying neighborhoods. The city plans to make two full passes during the month, although collection schedules may vary depending on weather conditions and the volume of leaves.

Residents are encouraged to rake leaves to the curb as they fall rather than waiting until collection crews reach their neighborhood. The city notes that residents may see leaf-collection equipment on the roads testing before the official November 2 start date.

When preparing leaves for pickup, residents should follow these guidelines:

  • Rake leaves to the curb, but do not place them directly in the street.
  • Keep leaf piles clear of fire hydrants, mailboxes, trees, signposts and intersections.

Residents who want to clear their yards early or dispose of additional yard waste can visit the Knox County Compost Facility at 7425 Thayer Road. A valid Knox County photo ID is required for drop-offs.

The compost facility’s hours through October 31 are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. Beginning November 1, the facility will switch to its winter schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
