Kenyon climbs to solo second at NCAA day two

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Kenyon College men’s golf team built on its historic day-one mark and vaulted up to solo second place at the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships, posting a five-under-par team score of 283.

The Owls took on Boulder Creek Golf Club, just 20 minutes away from yesterday’s Legacy Golf Club, as the split field switched courses for the second round. Kenyon finished with the second-lowest team score of the day and was one of only four squads to shoot an under-par round.

Jaiden Koonar once again headlined the Owls’ efforts on the leaderboard, ripping off a four-under 68. He carded three birdies and a bogey on both the front and back nines to put him in a three-way tie for second out of the 221-player field.

Will Hulsey and Jonathan Oakes each found red figures for round two by way of excellent back nines. Hulsey shot even par on the front and birdied the tenth, twelfth, and sixteenth holes en route to a two-under 70. Despite a two over 38 on the front, Oakes battled back with four birdies on the back nine to shoot 71. The Kenyon duo sits tied for fourteenth on the individual leaderboard.

The Owls’ fourth man for round two was Garrett Thesing, who, unlike Hulsey and Oakes, had a bogey-free front nine with two birdies. The back nine was where he found trouble, making five bogeys to go along with one birdie to set his round two score at 74.

Finally, after a stellar three-under performance yesterday, Armand Ouellette’s six-over 78 came in at fifth for Kenyon and did not count towards the team’s overall score.

As it stands, Kenyon now sits just two strokes back of Redlands for the top spot in the tournament and is one shot clear of 2022 champion Methodist University.

The top 18 teams and six individuals not on those teams will advance after today’s round, chopping 25 teams off of the field. All teams will play at Boulder Creek for the final two rounds, as the Owls will tee off at 9:50 am PDT tomorrow for round three.
