The City of Mount Vernon is asking residents in the East Chestnut neighborhood to weigh in on the future of a pedestrian footbridge that has been closed after part of its railing failed.
The city closed the bridge after the railing failure and placed large boulders around the entrance to discourage people from crossing. City officials say simply repairing the damaged railing would cost approximately $25,000, but the bridge has more significant issues that could require a much larger investment.
Mount Vernon Safety-Service Director Tanner Salyers said the bridge does not meet current standards, including requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Salyers said the city did not want to make a limited repair and give residents the impression that the bridge was otherwise safe and compliant when additional problems remain.
The city is now considering its options for the bridge and plans to seek input from residents who live in the surrounding neighborhood before determining what happens next.
The footbridge has provided a pedestrian connection in the East Chestnut area, making its future a neighborhood concern as city officials consider the cost of repairs and the requirements involved in bringing the structure up to current standards.
Officials have not announced a final decision on whether the bridge will be repaired, replaced or removed.
