Downtown Mount Vernon is preparing to kick off another season of First Friday celebrations with a throwback to the 1950s during “Shake, Rattle, & Roll Downtown” on Friday, June 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. on Public Square and throughout downtown. The free community event is presented by Edward Jones of Mount Vernon and organized by Experience Mount Vernon.
This year’s June First Friday will feature retro rock-and-roll vibes, live music, food trucks, family activities, and more than 85 vendors and exhibitors throughout downtown. Live entertainment will include music from Project Roundtable on the main stage, while the Community Spotlight stage will feature sneak peek performances from the MTVarts production of Grease. Organizers will also host a special 1950s-themed edition of “Name That Tune” during the event.
Additional attractions include a 1950s-themed photo booth, an expanded Touch-a-Truck experience, an archery trailer hosted by the Knox County Fish and Game Association, free books from the Words on Wheels Bus, and a large activity zone featuring games, crafts, and youth activities. More than 10 food trucks will also be set up throughout Public Square, West Vine Street, and West Gambier Street.
The event will also debut the new First Friday Passport program for children ages 12 and under. Participants can collect stamps throughout the summer for chances to win downtown gift cards and prize packages.
Street closures for the event will begin during the afternoon hours leading into First Friday festivities. Organizers encourage attendees to explore downtown businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues throughout the evening. More information is available through Experience Mount Vernon
