KVAA Welcomes Louie Palu for Alliance Workshop

The Kokosing Valley Arts Alliance will welcome internationally acclaimed documentary photographer and filmmaker Louie Palu to the Woodward Opera House on Saturday, May 30th from 1 to 3 p.m. for the latest installment of the KVAA Arts Alliance Workshop series.

Palu is internationally known for his decades of work documenting labor and mining communities, war zones, human rights issues, border conflicts, and climate change throughout the Arctic and around the world. His photography has appeared in publications including The New York Times, National Geographic, The Globe and Mail, and Foreign Policy, while his work has also been exhibited in major museums and galleries internationally.

Over the course of his career, Palu has documented conflict in Afghanistan, the Mexican drug war, detention operations at Guantanamo Bay, and the environmental and human impact of asbestos mining. His Arctic photography project, featuring more than 150,000 images captured over several years, earned international recognition and was featured by National Geographic and at South by Southwest.

Palu has received numerous honors for his work, including the Hasselblad Masters Award, the Guggenheim Fellowship, multiple Pulitzer Center grants, and recognition as Canadian Photojournalist of the Year.

KVAA says the free community event is designed to spark conversation, creativity, and connection through the arts while exploring how visual storytelling can shape public understanding of global issues. Organizers say attendees will have the opportunity to hear firsthand stories behind Palu’s work and learn how documentary photography can challenge perspectives and deepen understanding of the world around us.

The workshop will take place at the Woodward Opera House in downtown Mount Vernon. More information is available at KokosingArts.org.
