USILA picks Nelson for D3 Team of the Week

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —  The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced Wednesday that Kenyon College senior Thomas Nelson earned a spot on the organization’s D3 Team of the Week.

Just 10 NCAA Division III players are selected weekly to the USILA team and Nelson, a faceoff specialist, claimed one of those spots based on his performance in the Owls’ 10-7 home-opening win over Colorado College. In that game, which took place on Friday, Nelson was perfect, winning 16-of-16 faceoffs against the Tigers. The Minneapolis, Minnesota native also rang up a game-high 13 ground balls.

The USILA award comes on the heels of Nelson already being named the North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week, as well as gaining preseason All-America accolades from two different lacrosse publications.

In Kenyon’s two games played, Nelson is a combined 28-of-31 (.903) in faceoff battles. Although it’s early in the season, that win percentage ranks as the best among all men’s lacrosse players in NCAA Division III.

Nelson and the Owls (2-0) will look to keep things headed in the right direction today, with a home game against Baldwin Wallace University, slated for a 3:30 p.m. start.
