A Newark man is facing felony charges after a Licking County grand jury indicted him in connection with a fatal traffic crash that investigators say involved impaired driving.
According to court records, the defendant has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence stemming from a crash that claimed the life of a 28-year-old man.
Authorities allege the defendant was operating a vehicle while impaired when the collision occurred. Investigators spent months reviewing evidence before presenting the case to the Licking County Grand Jury, which returned the indictment this week.
An aggravated vehicular homicide charge in Ohio alleges that a driver’s impaired operation of a vehicle caused another person’s death. If convicted, the offense carries the potential for a lengthy prison sentence, mandatory driver’s license suspension and significant financial penalties.
The case will now proceed through Licking County Common Pleas Court, where the defendant is expected to enter a plea before future hearings are scheduled.
The indictment represents only an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
