Licking County Sheriff’s Office launches investigation into scam

On May 9, 2025, the Licking County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation after a local resident was scammed out of $27,000.

The victim was led to believe that their Apple ID was compromised and needed to “Secure assets” to protect themselves. The suspect arrived at the victim’s residence and took possession of the $27,000.

On May 12, 2025, the victim was contacted again and was instructed to pay an additional $20,000. When the suspect arrived to collect the money, he was met by detectives who arrested him.

42-year-old Liwei Zhang of China was arrested and incarcerated at the Licking County Justice Center and is being charged with felony theft.
