Fatal Crash in Morrow County

For Immediate Release: February 3, 2025

Mount Gilead – The Mount Gilead Post is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 05:32 AM, on US Route 42 near milepost 10 in Gilead Township, Morrow County.

Summer R. Kennard, age 20 of Cardington, was operating a 2010 Toyota RAV4 eastbound on US Route 42. Ricky Smalley, age 63 of Galion, was operating a 2013 Ford F-150 westbound on US Route 42. Ms. Kennard drove off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and traveled left of center. Ms. Kennard’s vehicle was struck by Mr. Smalley’s vehicle.

Ms. Kennard was transported from the scene by Morrow County EMS to Morrow County Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Mr. Smalley was transported by Morrow County EMS to Morrow County Hospital with minor injuries. Both drivers were the only vehicle occupants and were wearing their seatbelts.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Morrow County EMS, and Cardington Fire Department. Alcohol/drugs are not suspected factors in this crash. The crash remains under investigation.
