COLUMBUS – The Ohio Department of Transportation, Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP), and the American Honda Motor Company are once again teaming up to distribute 13,000 bicycle helmets to 176 groups and organizations in 61 counties across Ohio.
Bike helmets save lives and prevent injuries. However, it is estimated that only 10-20% of Ohio children wear a helmet while riding their bike. Research finds that about 75% of all bicycle-related fatalities could be prevented by simply wearing a bike helmet.
Since 2011, the Put A Lid On It program has distributed 100,000 helmets to hundreds of organizations in every corner of the state. Last year alone, more than 10,000 helmets went to 150 organizations in 52 counties across Ohio. These helmets are then distributed to children at no cost.
The public can obtain helmets at various community events throughout the year.
