Newark man sentenced to prison for killing of girlfriend

NEWARK, OH – October 14, 2025 — A Newark man will spend at least 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to the brutal killing of his girlfriend last year.

On Monday, Andrew Hoskinson was sentenced to 15 years to life for the murder of 26-year-old Tala Smith. The sentencing comes just days after Hoskinson changed his plea to guilty, avoiding a trial that Smith’s family says would have reopened painful wounds.

Emotional Courtroom Scene

In a tense courtroom, Hoskinson cried and apologized, asking for forgiveness from Smith’s family.

But her parents, who have waited over a year for justice, said they do not believe his apology was sincere.

“His tears don’t mean anything to us,” said Smith’s mother outside the courtroom. “He made a choice that ended our daughter’s life. Now he has to live with the consequences.”

The Crime

The case dates back to March 2024, when police were called to the area near the Manning Street Bridge. Investigators said Hoskinson had beaten and strangled Smith during a violent altercation.

Smith was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but despite doctors’ efforts, she died days later from her injuries.

Initially, Hoskinson pleaded not guilty, but prosecutors said evidence—including witness statements and forensic reports—clearly pointed to his guilt. His change of plea last week marked a turning point in the case.

Family Vows to Fight Parole

Hoskinson’s sentence carries the possibility of parole, but Tala Smith’s family says they’ll fight to make sure he remains behind bars.

“We’ll be there at every single hearing,” said her father. “We want to make sure he never has the chance to hurt anyone else.”

Remembering Tala

Friends and relatives described Tala Smith as a bright, compassionate woman with dreams of becoming a teacher. A memorial fund in her name has been set up to support victims of domestic violence.

“We lost someone who had so much more to give,” said a close friend. “We hope her story reminds others to speak up and seek help.”
