Suspicious Device found in Newark

NEWARK, OHIO – On April 10, 2024 Newark Division of Police and the Newark Division of
Fire responded to 914 East Main Pkwy on a Suspicious Device. Upon arrival, they were advised
that while cleaning out the garage for an auction, a device resembling a “mortar shell” was
discovered. The item was placed in the yard and emergency units were called.

Newark Fire and Newark Police secured the area and began evacuating nearby residents.
Newark Fire contacted the Columbus Bomb Squad and they responded. Columbus Bomb Squad
contacted the military and it was determined to be an unexploded ordinance from the WWI era.

Columbus Bomb Squad took possession of the device and transported it to a designated area for
destruction.
