Howard, Ohio (January 12, 2026) — East Knox Local Schools went into lockdown Monday morning after receiving an anonymous tip about an individual who was armed and intended to enter the high school, prompting a major law enforcement response.
Superintendent Richard Baird stated that the school resource officer immediately began assessing the situation and implementing security measures upon receiving the tip. Officers from multiple agencies arrived on scene within approximately five minutes, with the number growing significantly as the incident unfolded.
According to the Sheriff Dan Wekesser, more than 40 officers responded, including personnel from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Vernon Police Department, and sheriff’s deputies from Morrow and Licking counties. The Coshocton and Richland County Sheriff’s Offices were placed on standby, and SWAT teams from the Mount Vernon Police and Knox County Sheriff’s Office were also deployed.
It took officers roughly one hour to fully clear the building and secure the area. No injuries were reported, and the situation was handled as a precautionary measure due to the credible nature of the reported threat.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. It is being led by Detective Matt White of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, along with Detective John Bartolucci from the U.S. Secret Service and Homeland Security.
Superintendent Baird indicated that a decision regarding school operations for tomorrow would be made and announced hopefully before 8:00 p.m Monday Night.
