Warren Rupp Observatory to Offer Free Public Telescope Viewing on Independence Day

While many families will end their Independence Day celebrations watching fireworks, astronomy enthusiasts can cap off the evening by exploring the night sky at the Warren Rupp Observatory.

The Richland Astronomical Society will host a free public viewing on Saturday, July 4, beginning at approximately 10 p.m. EDT, weather permitting. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe the night sky through the observatory’s impressive 36-inch telescope, along with several additional telescopes that will be available during the event.

Those who arrive early can also attend a free astronomy presentation beginning at 9 p.m. Society members will share photos and stories from their recent visits to two major observatories in the western United States, offering guests a behind-the-scenes look at professional astronomical research and observation.

The observatory is located on the grounds of Hidden Hollow Resident Camp, 5127 Possum Run Road near Bellville.

Admission to both the presentation and telescope viewing is free, although donations to support the Richland Astronomical Society and the Warren Rupp Observatory are welcome.

Organizers encourage visitors to check weather conditions before attending, as telescope viewing is dependent on clear skies.
