Motorcyclists’ Safety is Everyone’s Safety
As the weather warms up, more motorcycles are hitting the road. Whether you ride, drive, or just care about traffic safety, we can all work together to make our roadways a place of mutual respect and safe travel for motorcyclists and motorists alike. Join the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) safety initiative and remind our community that Motorcyclists’ Safety Is Everyone’s Safety.
Tips for Motorcyclists
1. Always wear a DOT-compliant helmet and other personal protective gear while riding. The NHSTA estimates that helmets saved the lives of 1,872 motorcyclists in 2017 alone.
2. Complete rider education courses.
3. Make sure your motorcycle license is current.
Tips for Motorists
1. Remember: motorcyclists have the same rights on the road as any motorist.
2. If you are turning at an intersection with an obstructed view of oncoming traffic, wait to see around the obstruction, scan for all roadway users (including motorcyclists), and proceed cautiously.
3. When following a motorcycle, allow for plenty of space around the motorcycle to maneuver or stop in an emergency, change speed, or adjust lane position.
Tips for Everyone
1. Never operate a vehicle distracted or impaired.
2. Observe all traffic laws, and always obey the speed limit.
3. Drive and ride defensively.
Share these tips with your friends, family, and social media followers to make sure that no matter how we choose to travel, we can get where we want to go safely.
