The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) announced that it has awarded $800,000 in hazardous materials training grants to 30 applicants.
“Hazardous materials training grants will provide thousands of emergency response personnel with valuable training to adequately respond to emergencies across Ohio,” stated PUCO Chair Jenifer French.
Through the annual hazardous materials training grant program, educational institutions and local governments across Ohio are awarded grants for training emergency responders to best respond to incidents related to hazardous materials. The 30 applicants and awarded grants are as follows:
- The Bedford Fire Department $14,910 to fund confined space rescue operations, hazmat refresher and lithium-ion battery emergency trainings for 72 personnel.
- The Bellevue Fire Department $12,750 to fund hazmat confined space technician training for 10 personnel.
- Bowling Green Fire Department will receive $4,500 for one train the trainer course.
- Franklin County Emergency Management & HS $8,384 to fund a Franklin County hazardous materials commodity flow study.
- Chagrin/Southeast Council of Governments/Westshore Hazmat Team/Southwest Emergency Response Team will receive $21,100 to host the 2025 Ohio Hazmat Teams Conference to train 294 personnel.
- Cincinnati State Technical and Community College $45,987 to fund various hazardous materials refresher courses and workshops.
- City of Green Division of Fire $6,100 to fund hazardous materials operations level refresher courses.
- City of Toledo, Division of Environmental Services $16,524 to conduct emergency response awareness workshop and hazardous waste operations and emergency response refresher training for 370 personnel.
- Cleveland Department of Public Utilities $12,003 to conduct hazardous waste operations and emergency response refresher training.
- Cleveland State University $400,000 to conduct 10 different hazardous materials training and awareness courses.
- County Line Joint Fire District $7,380 towards the completion of hazmat technician training for 10 personnel.
- Delaware County Homeland Security & Emergency Management $12,750 to conduct lithium-ion emergency response training for 150 personnel.
- East Holmes Fire & EMS $3,800 to conduct hazardous materials refresher course for 25 personnel.
- Fairfield County Emergency Management Agency $8,2000 to conduct disaster operations and the communications center 2nd Edition training for 20 personnel.
- Greater Cincinnati Hazardous Materials Unit, Inc. $11,900 to conduct HazmatIQ above the line/below the line training for 90 personnel.
- Hamilton County Local Emergency Planning Committee $12,900 for HazmatIQ first responder offensive and air monitoring courses.
- Huron County Emergency Management Agency $6,750 to conduct rural response considerations hazmat training for 30 personnel.
- Jackson Township Fire Department $2,950 to conduct an alternative fuels in transportation training for 50 personnel.
- Jefferson Township Fire Department $11,375 to conduct hazmat technician training for 20 personnel.
- Jerome Township Division of Fire $15,665 to conduct a Blue Card command certification program and train the trainer session for 30 personnel.
- Lorain County Emergency Management Agency $10,550 to conduct various hazardous materials training courses for 150 personnel.
- Mansfield Fire Department $9,350 to conduct various hazardous materials training courses for 90 personnel.
- Olmsted Township Fire Department $6,500 to conduct hazardous materials operation refresher training.
- Perrysburg Township Fire & EMS $8,125 to conduct hazmat officer and safety officer training, and a hazardous materials technician refresher training for 50 personnel.
- Scioto County Emergency Management Agency $4,250 to conduct lithium-ion battery emergency training for 50 personnel.
- Seneca County Local Emergency Planning Committee $20,125 to conduct various hazardous materials training courses for 84 personnel.
- Summit County Special Operations Response Team-Hazmat Branch $12,550 to conduct grounding and bonding tactics and hazardous materials refresher training and exercise for 120 personnel.
- The University of Findlay $51,745 to conduct various hazardous materials training courses.
- Wayne County Regional Training Facility $31,800 to conduct hazardous materials operations course, lithium-ion emergency training, decontamination training, and hazardous materials technician certification courses for 90 personnel.
- Wooster Division of Fire $9,075 to conduct a hazardous materials refresher course for 47 personnel.
