Ohio has officially broken its record for the most tornadoes in a single year, with 71 confirmed so far in 2024. The latest tornado touched down in Preble County, east of Eaton, during Tuesday’s severe weather, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). This weak tornado adds to what has already been a historic year for tornadoes across the state.
The previous record for tornadoes in Ohio stood at 61, but this year’s severe weather has surpassed all expectations, with storms sweeping through both urban and rural areas. The NWS continues to investigate more damage reports, meaning additional tornadoes could still be confirmed.
Southwestern Ohio, where the latest tornado occurred, has seen multiple rounds of storms this season. Despite being labeled a weak tornado, the storm caused localized damage, adding to the growing list of areas impacted by extreme weather in 2024.
Officials are urging residents to stay vigilant as the storm season continues. With more severe weather expected, the potential for additional tornadoes remains high. Emergency management teams are working to assess and respond to the damage, while meteorologists continue to study the factors contributing to this record-breaking year.
