Newark Man sentenced to 25 years to life in Prison

The case of State of Ohio vs. Jamie Herndon, 43 years of age of Newark, Ohio, was set for trial on September 3, 2024. A thirteen-count indictment, including multiple counts of Rape, Gross Sexual Imposition, Strangulation, Illegal Use of a Minor in Nudity Oriented Material and Pandering Obscenity Involving a Minor had been returned by the Licking County Grand Jury in January of 2024.

On January 10, 2024, Newark Police Department began investigating a report that the Defendant, Jamie Herndon, had been raping and sexually assaulting a then ten-year old child. Detective Steve Vanoy and Licking County Children Services conducted the investigation. The child reported to authorities that the defendant had been engaging in sex acts with the child since the age of 5. The child reported being strangled by Herndon many times over the course of five years and threatened with harm if the child told anyone what was happening. Multiple pieces of evidence were recovered that corroborated the child’s statements, including evidence in Herndon’s phone where he had directed the child to send him photographs in a state of nudity.

Prior to the start of trial, Herndon entered multiple guilty pleas to the charges. Licking County Prosecutor Jenny Wells, recommended a mandatory sentence of 25 years to life in prison. After serving the mandatory 25 years Herndon will have to appear before the Ohio Parole Board to determine if he is eligible for release from prison. The Court ordered Herndon be classified as a Tier III Sex Offender registrant. This classification will require him to register every 90 days for the rest of his life if released from prison. Jenny Wells thanks the Newark Police Department, Licking County Children Services, The Ohio State Highway Patrol Computer Crimes Unit, and Kids’ Place of Licking County for all of their hard work and dedication to see justice done in this case.
