New Study shows Domestic Violence costs Ohio over One Billion Dollars annually

A new study from the Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) reveals that domestic violence costs the state approximately $1.2 billion annually, the highest among Ohio and its five neighboring states. The findings highlight the profound financial burden that domestic violence imposes on health care, the workforce, and the economy as a whole.

According to ODVN, an estimated 180,000 individuals in Ohio experience domestic violence each year. The study aimed to quantify the financial impact of domestic abuse, uncovering that health care costs and lost wages due to victims being unable to return to work are the two biggest contributing factors to the economic toll.

“The financial cost is just one aspect of the devastating effects of domestic violence, but it underscores the urgent need for increased resources, prevention programs, and policy changes to support survivors,” said an ODVN spokesperson.

Advocates are calling for enhanced funding for support services, including shelters, counseling, and legal aid, to help survivors recover and rebuild their lives. Additionally, policymakers are urged to consider workplace protections and healthcare initiatives to mitigate the financial and personal toll of domestic violence in Ohio.
