Mt. Vernon City Council – May 26th, 2026

he Mount Vernon City Council moved quickly through Tuesday night’s meeting, with most legislation receiving first or second readings. One notable exception was Resolution 2026-62, which council approved immediately following a motion from Councilman Mel Severns.

The resolution authorizes the city’s Safety Service Director to partner with the Knox County Land Bank on infrastructure improvements near North Norton Street. The project includes a proposed $336,325 contract with Palmer & Son Excavating to complete an aqueduct replacement along a portion of the vacated roadway.

City officials say the work is necessary because of unstable ground conditions in the area. Once completed, the project is expected to improve traffic flow in and out of Heartland Commerce Park, an area continuing to see increased industrial growth and development activity.

The City of Mount Vernon has committed $250,000 toward the project, along with an additional $25,000 in contingency funding. The Knox County Land Bank will contribute the remaining $86,325.

At the conclusion of the meeting, council members also recognized Councilwoman LeNan Hager for her work organizing and coordinating Monday’s Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony.
