The City of Mount Vernon will celebrate the dedication of a new public monument honoring military families with a special ceremony on Thursday, July 2.
The “Let Freedom Ring Blue Star Family Bell Circle” will be dedicated during a public ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. at American Heritage Park, located behind the historic CA&C Depot. The event is free and open to the public and will include remarks from local leaders, musical performances and the ceremonial first playing of the bells.
The monument is dedicated to Blue Star Families—those with an immediate family member currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. While the Blue Star symbol traditionally recognizes active-duty military members, the installation also honors the sacrifices made by the parents, spouses, children and loved ones who support them at home.
The centerpiece of the installation is an interactive circle of 41 uniquely tuned bells. Visitors can walk around the monument and strike each bell, creating the melody of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” as they move through the circle.
The artwork was created by Michigan artist Tom Kaufman, who handcrafted the bells from recycled welding and oxygen tanks. Each tank was individually cut, tuned, welded and mounted to a circular steel structure before being powder coated, creating a one-of-a-kind public art installation that blends music, craftsmanship and patriotism.
City officials encourage residents to attend the dedication and experience the monument firsthand, whether to honor a loved one currently serving in the military, recognize the sacrifices of military families or simply enjoy the unique interactive artwork.
The ceremony marks the official opening of the newest addition to American Heritage Park and is part of Mount Vernon’s Independence Day celebrations leading into the Fourth of July holiday.
