COLUMBUS, OH – Former Ohio State football coach and Youngstown State University president Jim Tressel has officially been confirmed as Ohio’s next lieutenant governor.
The Ohio Senate voted 31-1 in favor of Tressel’s appointment, followed by a 68-27 approval vote in the House. He replaces Jon Husted, who was recently appointed to the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Vice President JD Vance.
Governor Mike DeWine announced Tressel as his choice for lieutenant governor, emphasizing the former coach’s leadership skills and his commitment to education and workforce development. “Jim Tressel is a proven leader, both on and off the field. His dedication to education and mentorship will be a tremendous asset to Ohioans,” DeWine said.
Tressel, 72, is well known for leading the Ohio State Buckeyes to a national championship in 2002 and later serving as president of Youngstown State University until his retirement in 2023. In accepting the position, Tressel expressed gratitude and a deep commitment to serving the people of Ohio.
“I’ve always been passionate about leadership and education, and I’m honored to take on this new role,” Tressel said. “I look forward to working with Governor DeWine and the administration to make a meaningful impact.”
The date for Tressel’s swearing-in ceremony has not yet been announced, but the governor’s office says details will be forthcoming.
