As the first official weekend of summer arrives, the Heart of Ohio Trail is once again becoming one of Knox County’s busiest outdoor destinations.
The paved multi-use trail stretches for more than 20 miles through Knox County, connecting Mount Vernon, Centerburg, Fredericktown and several rural communities. Throughout the summer, the trail welcomes cyclists, runners, walkers and families looking to enjoy the outdoors while exploring local parks, businesses and attractions.
Originally developed on a former railroad corridor, the trail has become a key recreational asset for the region and is maintained through a partnership involving Knox County Park District, local governments and volunteers.
Local officials say the trail has also become an economic asset, drawing visitors who stop at restaurants, coffee shops and retail businesses in communities along the route. Many riders use the trail to travel between downtown Mount Vernon and neighboring villages, making it one of the county’s most popular destinations for active recreation.
The trail also connects users to several parks and attractions, including Ariel-Foundation Park, downtown Mount Vernon, and multiple trailheads that offer parking, restrooms and picnic areas.
With summer in full swing, park officials are reminding visitors to stay hydrated, wear helmets when riding bicycles, obey posted trail signs and be courteous to others by keeping to the right and announcing when passing.
The Heart of Ohio Trail is open year-round from dawn until dusk and is free for public use. Officials encourage residents and visitors alike to take advantage of the trail as Knox County’s outdoor recreation season continues.
