A Mount Vernon man is in custody as police investigate the death of a woman found inside a residence early Thursday morning.
According to the Mount Vernon Police Department, officers responded to a reported disturbance at approximately 1:43 a.m. at a single-family home in the 700 block of Upper Fredericktown Road.
When officers entered the residence, they discovered a 49-year-old woman deceased inside the home. Police detained the only other occupant of the residence, Jason D. Payne, 42, who remains in custody.
The Mount Vernon Police Department’s Detective Division responded to the scene, along with investigators from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), to assist with the investigation.
Police say the investigation remains active and ongoing.
At this time, Payne is being held on a probation violation out of Cuyahoga County. Authorities say additional criminal charges may be forthcoming as detectives continue their investigation.
Investigators emphasized that the incident appears to have been isolated to the residence, and they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public.
The identity of the deceased woman has not been released in accordance with the victim privacy protections provided under Ohio’s Marsy’s Law.
