Ontario has hired Bret Simmermacher to be its next varsity baseball coach. Simmermacher has area ties as a former baseball coach at Crestline and Shelby. Most recently, he was the head coach at East Ridge High School in Clermont, Florida. A Crestline native, Simmermacher spent a season in the minor leagues back in 1986 as a left-handed relief pitcher for the Bellingham Mariners, the short-season A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, posting a 2-2 record. In his first season as head coach at Shelby, he piloted the Whippets to a Division II State Final Four with a 21-7 record. He spent time on college baseball staffs at Ashland University, New Mexico Military Institute and West Texas A&M University, among other stops across the nation.
