Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Music Department will welcome the community to an afternoon of live music when the university’s instrumental ensembles perform a free concert Saturday, October 10.
The concert begins at 1 p.m. in the R.R. Hodges Chapel/Auditorium and will feature performances by the MVNU Jazz Band, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Flute Choir and String Ensemble.
The Jazz Band, directed by Chuck Dettmar, will open the program with Don Menza’s “Groovin’ Hard,” featuring the ensemble’s full saxophone section.
The jazz portion of the concert will continue with Michel Legrand’s “I Will Wait for You,” featuring vocalist Christiana Schuler, before concluding with Steve Allen’s “This Could Be the Start of Something Big,” arranged by Mark Taylor.
The Symphonic Wind Ensemble will then present a program inspired by the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The ensemble will perform Brian Balmages’ “Eternal Flame,” a piece commissioned in honor of the Eternal Flame memorial in Zanesville, followed by William Schuman’s “Chester” and Frank Ticheli’s arrangement of “Shenandoah.”
The ensemble will also perform music by John Williams from the film The Cowboys, before closing with Harold Walters’ “Instant Concert,” which incorporates melodies from 30 well-known classical works and songs.
The concert will also feature performances by the Flute Choir, directed by Jennifer Packard, and the String Ensemble, directed by Chris Japikse.
The concert is free and open to the community.
