Mansfield will add a lasting symbol of American history to Liberty Park this week as the city prepares to plant a commemorative white oak tree in honor of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The tree will be planted Friday, September 4, at Liberty Park, located at 493 Grace Street, as part of the America 250-Ohio Heritage Trees program.
The statewide initiative is placing a native white oak tree in all 88 Ohio counties as part of the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
Mansfield’s tree was selected for Liberty Park because of the site’s historical significance, central location and role as a gathering place for residents.
The Heritage Trees program was launched by America 250-Ohio in Lima on Arbor Day 2025. Organizers say the trees are intended to serve as living reminders of the nation’s history and the communities that make up Ohio.
The program draws inspiration from Boston’s historic Liberty Tree, which became an important symbol during the American Revolution.
Each Ohio county is receiving a native white oak to commemorate the country’s semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The Mansfield planting is part of a statewide series of events leading into the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.
The tree will remain at Liberty Park as a permanent community landmark and reminder of the anniversary.
