Investigators Seek Public Help in Utica Arson

Utica, Ohio – Investigators with the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal (SFM) have ruled a fire in Utica, Ohio (Knox County) as being caused by arson. Investigators with SFM’s Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau are now seeking tips from the public to help identify those responsible.

On Aug. 12, 2024 at 6:41 a.m., the Bladensburg Fire District responded to a reported structure fire at 2185 Cullison Rd. with flames visible on the front porch. Prior to fire crews arriving on the scene, the fire was extinguished by a passerby and the homeowner with a garden hose. However, crews did have to extinguish several hot spots in the attic located above the southwest corner of the front porch.

As a result of the fire, the structure suffered moderate damage. No one was injured. Mutual aid was provided by the Utica Fire Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.

During the subsequent investigation, investigators determined the fire to be the result of an intentional human act. A reward of $5,000 is being offered by the Blue Ribbon Arson Committee for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. Anyone with information is urged to contact the State Fire Marshal’s tip line at 800-589-2728. Callers can remain anonymous, and all tips will be thoroughly investigated. Individuals with information also may call the Knox County Sheriff’s Office at 740-397-3333.
