Granville Township Approves $8 Million Denison Golf Course Renovation

Granville Township trustees have unanimously approved an 8-million-dollar renovation project at Denison Golf Club, clearing the way for preliminary work to begin as early as October.

The decision came after trustees twice delayed a vote so Denison University officials could answer questions from neighboring residents about the project.

The historic course was designed by renowned golf architect Donald Ross in 1924. Denison hired Hanse Golf Course Design to develop the renovation plan, which is the first phase of what could eventually become a two- or three-phase project.

One major point of discussion has been tree removal. The current plans call for 362 trees to be removed, prompting concerns from some nearby residents about property lines and the impact of the work.

Denison officials say some of the planned tree work involves thinning and pruning to improve sunlight and turf conditions. The university also said it will rely on property surveys and will err on the side of leaving a tree in place if there is uncertainty about ownership.

The project also includes significant work around holes 16 and 17, including excavation and changes to the course’s layout.

Denison says preliminary tree work could begin this fall and winter. The broader renovation is expected to continue after the course closes in June 2027, with reopening anticipated in spring 2028, weather permitting.
