The former Mifflin Elementary School property is heading to the auction block following action by the Madison Local School District Board of Education.
The school board approved a resolution Monday authorizing the sale of approximately 10.28 acres along Reed Road and State Route 430 through an online public auction.
RES Auction Services LLC will conduct the auction from October 24 through November 3. The property consists of six parcels and includes the former elementary school building.
Mifflin Elementary was built in 1949, with additions constructed in 1962 and 1980. The district identified it as the oldest building it was using during the previous school year.
The school was ultimately closed as part of budget reductions within the district. A farewell open house was held in April, giving former students, staff and community members an opportunity to return to the building before its closure.
The district is also preparing to auction items remaining inside the building that it no longer needs. Those items could include student desks, whiteboards, cafeteria supplies and custodial equipment. The contents auction is expected to take place during the same period as the property auction.
The school board is currently expected to consider the winning property bid at its November 4 meeting, although officials could take action at a later meeting.
The district says the successful bidder must provide a 10-percent non-refundable deposit at the conclusion of the auction. The buyer would also be responsible for specified closing costs and other expenses associated with the purchase.
The district has placed several conditions on the sale, including disclaimers concerning the property’s physical and environmental condition. The board specifically notes that some floor tile and boiler insulation or wrapping materials contain asbestos-containing materials.
The district has not conducted a comprehensive environmental investigation of the property and will not be responsible for remediation, demolition, environmental response work or repairs following the sale. Prospective bidders can arrange an inspection of the property before the auction.
