Delaware City Council has approved the annexation of land that will pave the way for construction of a fifth high school in the rapidly growing Olentangy Local School District.
The annexation is a key step in the district’s long-term plan to accommodate continued enrollment growth in southern Delaware County, one of the fastest-growing regions in Ohio. District officials say the new high school will help relieve crowding at existing campuses while meeting the needs of thousands of new students expected over the coming years.
Olentangy Local Schools currently operates four traditional high schools—Olentangy, Olentangy Orange, Olentangy Liberty, and Olentangy Berlin. Continued residential development throughout Delaware County has driven steady increases in student enrollment, prompting district leaders to begin planning for another comprehensive high school.
The property approved for annexation is expected to become the future site of the district’s fifth high school, although additional planning, engineering, and design work must still be completed before construction can begin.
District officials say the project is part of a broader facilities plan designed to keep pace with the area’s rapid population growth. In recent years, Olentangy Local Schools has opened new elementary and middle schools while expanding existing facilities to address increasing enrollment.
Community leaders say the new high school will not only provide additional classroom space but also create opportunities for expanded academic programs, athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular activities for future students.
While a construction timeline has not yet been announced, school officials say planning will continue as the district works through the design process and future funding considerations.
Olentangy Local Schools remains one of the largest and fastest-growing public school districts in Ohio, serving more than 24,000 students across southern Delaware County.
