Bayer Announces $2.2 Billion Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Facility in New Albany

Bayer is investing $2.2 billion to build a new pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in New Albany, bringing hundreds of high-skilled jobs and a major new life-sciences investment to central Ohio.

The company announced the project October 2, saying the new facility will be located in the New Albany International Business Park.

Bayer expects the project to create approximately 600 high-value permanent jobs and roughly 1,500 construction jobs during the building phase.

The planned campus will use a modular design combining drug-substance and drug-product manufacturing. Bayer says the facility will incorporate advanced digital and automation technologies and will support the company’s growing pharmaceutical portfolio.

The company says the New Albany operation will support medicines in areas including oncology, cardiovascular care and renal care.

Bayer says the investment builds on more than $7 billion the company has spent on U.S. pharmaceutical research and development and manufacturing during the past five years.

Construction of the New Albany facility is expected to create significant short-term employment during the building phase, followed by hundreds of permanent positions once the manufacturing operation is up and running.

The first manufacturing module is currently expected to open in 2031, with a second module planned for 2034.

Ohio officials say the project represents a major addition to the state’s growing life-sciences and biomanufacturing sector. New Albany officials say the investment will also create opportunities for partnerships between the company, local schools and workforce-development programs.

Bayer’s announcement comes as central Ohio continues to attract major investments in pharmaceutical manufacturing, research and biotechnology, further expanding the region’s life-sciences industry.
