The City of Mount Vernon has begun the process of annexing about 1.5 acres of Knox County-owned property from Monroe Township.
The Mount Vernon City Council took the first step during its September 14 meeting at the request of the Knox County Board of Commissioners.
The property is located near the Mount Vernon Country Club and is surrounded by other county-owned property that is already within the city.
Mount Vernon Law Director Rob Broeren said the parcel already receives city water and wastewater services. Under the proposed annexation, the city would also provide stormwater regulation as well as police and fire services.
The city has already been providing fire protection to the property through an agreement with the township. Annexation would add city police services.
Broeren said the city has a 20-day period to formally notify the county whether it consents to the annexation.
City Council President Bruce Hawkins also explained that the property is unusual because it is owned by the county and therefore does not generate property tax revenue that would shift between the township and city.
The annexation process will continue through the city’s required legislative procedures.
