New water-well testing near Alexandria and Granville has identified potential water sources that could produce millions of gallons per day for the region.
Test wells were drilled at three sites — two near Alexandria and one near Granville — as officials look for possible water sources to support the Intel computer-chip manufacturing campus in New Albany. Testing indicates the sites could collectively produce about 9.3 million gallons of water per day.
The testing comes as central Ohio continues to deal with the infrastructure demands created by major industrial development.
The Intel project, along with surrounding growth, has increased attention on the region’s long-term water supply. Officials are studying potential sources to determine how much water they can reliably provide and whether they can be developed without negatively affecting existing users or the surrounding environment.
The well testing is part of a broader effort to understand the area’s groundwater resources as Licking County continues to experience rapid economic and population growth.
