A Mansfield police officer has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol and later being arrested on an OVI charge.
According to Mansfield Police Chief Jason Bammann, Officer John Meyer reported for work at approximately 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 29, and was determined to be under the influence of alcohol.
Meyer was immediately relieved of duty and transported to OhioHealth for drug and alcohol testing. He was subsequently placed on administrative leave while the department conducts an internal investigation.
Less than eight hours later, at approximately 9 p.m., Mansfield police were notified that Meyer had been stopped by the Ontario Police Department for allegedly operating a vehicle while under the influence.
Meyer was arrested and booked into the Richland County Jail.
According to police, he is facing charges of operating a vehicle impaired, marked lanes violation, improper lane change and open container.
Meyer, 39, has served with the Mansfield Police Department since January 28, 2014.
The Mansfield Police Department said the administrative process was initiated in accordance with the Fraternal Order of Police collective bargaining agreement and city policies.
Chief Bammann said no additional information is currently available because the matter remains under an active administrative investigation and the criminal charges are pending.
Meyer is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
