Mount Vernon Earns Silver Designation in MORPC Sustainable2050 Program

MOUNT VERNON — The City of Mount Vernon has become the first municipality in Knox County to earn recognition through the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission’s Sustainable2050 initiative.

The city recently received Silver-level designation after adopting a formal resolution of participation and earning 71 points across five sustainability goals. The voluntary program recognizes communities that demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship, responsible growth, and long-term planning.

Mayor Matt Starr said the designation reflects work that has already been taking place throughout the community.

“Stewardship really begins at home, and we are honored that the City has earned Silver Level recognition through MORPC’s Sustainable2050 Program,” Starr said. “What I appreciate about Sustainable2050 is that it is not a top-down program built on mandates or a one-size-fits-all agenda. MORPC has served as a true partner by helping Mount Vernon more clearly define a sustainability plan that works for our community, reflects our values, and builds on the good work already happening here.”

Among the projects contributing to the city’s Silver designation were the creation of the Knox County Active Transportation Plan, the establishment of First Fridays Bike Valet in 2022, the development of the Columbus Delano Field of Discovery, the Kokosing River Restoration Project, the completion of the Mansfield Avenue Shared Use Path in 2025, the Main Street Bridge Underpass, Captain Hunter’s Landing Splash Pad, and the Catherine Street Reconstruction Project.

Brandi Whetstone, MORPC’s Director of Sustainability, praised Mount Vernon’s efforts.

“The City of Mount Vernon’s elevation to Silver status within the Sustainable2050 initiative demonstrates the powerful impact of local leadership in driving regional environmental progress,” Whetstone said. “When communities commit to actionable environmental priorities, they build healthier, more resilient neighborhoods and strengthen economic vitality for generations to come.”

Sustainable2050 is a voluntary regional program that provides technical assistance, collaboration opportunities, and recognition to communities throughout MORPC’s 15-county region. Participating communities work toward goals such as improving transportation, protecting natural resources, increasing energy efficiency, and enhancing quality of life.

Mount Vernon is now one of 39 participating communities and regional organizations in central Ohio and joins just 21 members that have achieved certified status through the program.
