SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Kenyon College men’s indoor track and field team made its way to Springfield, Ohio, for the second time this season, this time competing in Wittenberg University’s Steemer Showcase. The Owls were one of 20 teams to test their mettle at the indoor meet, joining the Tigers and Wabash College in representing the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Kenyon’s best finish came in the shortest event of the outing as Tapiwa Gono Phiri finished fourth in the 60-meter dash. The sophomore completed the sprint in 7.10 seconds, his second-fastest finish this season.
Peter Bernhardt registered the Owls’ other top-10 finish with his performance in the one-mile race. The sophomore finished the event with a time of 4:27.14 and was the 10th runner to cross the finish line. In the same race, first-year Owen Rodstrom (4:35.09) finished 14th.
The Owls racked up five more top-15 finishes on the day. Ezekiel Kiwanuka and Josh Greville, a pair of first-years, finished 13th and 14th in the long jump. Kiwanuka leapt 5.94 meters, while Greville recorded a 5.90-meter jump. Greville also finished 12th in the triple jump with a distance of 12 meters.
In the 200-meter race, first-year Julius Thompson finished 12th after clocking a time of 22.81, while Gono Phiri ran a 22.95 to finish 17th.
Samuel Eluemunoh rounded out the top-15 finishes with a 13th-place showing in the shot put. The first-year made his mark 12.50 meters out; his second-furthest throw this season.
Kenyon boasted three additional top-20 marks thanks to Bernhardt, Joshua Breard, and Colter Murphy. Bernhardt finished 18th in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:01.94, while Breard clocked a 9:04.53 in the 3000-meter to finish 19th. Murphy’s 20th-place finish came in the long jump when he leaped 5.25m on his second attempt.
