MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University women’s basketball team (8-8, 3-3 CL) started the new year with a win over the University of Saint Francis (8-8, 4-2 CL) by a score of 69-65 on Wednesday evening, January 4 in Ariel Arena.
The Lady Cougars were in control throughout the game. At halftime, the hosts led Saint Francis by a score of 38-28. The second half saw the visitors storm back late in the game to make it close, but the Lady Cougars held out and Madelyn Lawson’s free throw at the end sealed the 69-65 win for MVNU.
MVNU did a great job taking care of the ball as it had a season low four turnovers to 16 assists on the evening. Great ball movement offensively led to plenty of open looks from three. The Lady Cougars hit 11 threes in the game.
Inside the Box Score
Sage Brannon had a huge game off the bench, scoring a game-high 21 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Maggie Coe scored 18 points and added four assists. She had five threes for MVNU.
Peyton Davis scored nine points and contributed with two assists.
Emily Walker scored six points and controlled the offense, dishing out a game-high eight assists.
Lawson scored four points and snatched nine rebounds, while also picking up a steal and a block.
