September 8-14, 2024 is National Suicide Prevention Week. Suicide for middle-aged
people, especially men, have the highest rate of suicide compared to other groups.
Eighty percent of all deaths by suicide in the U.S. are among men and women age 45-54. Men ages 85 and older have the highest rate of any group in the country as of
November 8, 2022.

“The National Suicide Prevention Month” gives us an opportunity to shine a special, encouraging light and awareness on this topic that affects all walks of life, and sends a clear, hopeful message that help and support is available, and suicide can be prevented. The race benefits the Knox County Suicide Prevention Coalition, a non-profit, charitable organization that is dedicated to reducing the rate of suicide in Knox County and connecting those at risk with resources and support.

The volunteer based organization offers grief support, information on available resources, and referral to community services. Knox County Suicide Coalition is holding its fourteenth annual 5k/10k walk/run on September 21st at Ariel Foundation Park, starting at 5:30 P.M. We will also be lighting the tower at 7:00 PM. Families and friends may bring a picture to share.

The walk and run is for suicide awareness, for those who have lost a loved one, for those who are suffering, and for those who want to remember. We are asking you to join us in making a difference in our community. We want to start the conversation about suicide. We must make this difficult topic a common conversation and destigmatize the shame and guilt associated with suicide and mental health. We invite
walkers, runners, joggers, dogs, and strollers of all ages to come out and participate. Even if you can’t join in the race, come support a great cause and start the conversation. Funds raised from this event will provide the education needed to identity the common causes of suicidal behavior, the warning signs of suicide, and how to help someone in a crisis.
