The Heisey Wind Ensemble concludes their 2021-2022 season with The Heisey Wind Ensemble Big Band presenting “Swinging With the HWEBB” on Saturday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m.   The concert will take place in the Reese Center on the campus of the Ohio State University Newark and Central Ohio Technical College.

The HWE is under the direction of Dr. Russel Mikkelson, but for this concert will have guest director/trumpeter Ben Huntoon.  The HEWBB is made up of members primarily from the Heisey Wind Ensemble, a concert band that is in their 37th season.  The 17 member HWE Big Band was formed in 2010.

Appearing as guest vocalist will be former Columbus news anchor and entertainer Cabot Rea.  Mr. Rea has ties to the Newark community having been a choral and band director with the Newark City Schools.  Following his years as a music educator he began working for WCMH-TV becoming the co-anchor for their evening newscasts.  He retired from channel 4 in 2015 after 30 years.  He remains very active as a singer.

Ben Huntoon recently retired after 30 years as the Jazz Education Consultant at Stanton’s Sheet Music in Columbus. He also served on the music faculty at Otterbein University for 15 years.  As a professional musician, Ben has performed with numerous artists and on many stages throughout the country for over 40 years. Among the bands are the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Vaughn Wiester’s Famous Jazz Orchestra, Glenn Miller Band, Tommy Dorsey Band, Guy Lombardo’s Royal Canadians, Jazz To Go, Rob Parton Big Band and the HWE Big Band.

Tickets will be sold only at the door an hour before the concert.  Ticket prices are $15 adults, $10 seniors, and $5 students.  More information about the concert can be found on the band’s web site at www.heiseywindensemble.org
